a journey of 2,652 miles
THE PACIFIC CREST TRAIL 2018
starts with a single step.
Miles 1799.3 to 1820.9 (+ 0.8 roadwalk to Mazama Village). Awesome View Camp to Mazama Village Camp (Crater Lake).
We set our alarm clock to 04.45am because we need to reach Mazama Village at Crater Lake by 5pm today before the general stores closes. We had 6 packages shipped to that store and want to leave early the next day when the store won’t be open yet. It is still pitch black when we leave our tent and besides Trooper all the other hikers (we were about 6 tonight) are still laying in their warm sleeping bags enjoying some sleep.
We really want to do the remaining 22 miles as fast as possible and are really excited to reach Crater Lake, and hopefully BigBro.
The first 3 miles are all downhill and after a couple of minutes we pass the 1800 mile marker! Awesome, “only” 850 miles (1370 km) remaining until Canada! We hike on for 3 more hours, past a burnt area, climb two smaller fuckers and then decide to have breakfast at a pretty meadow. It is a beautiful day now, the sun is shining and temperatures are pleasant.
But when we eat our breakfast, there are suddenly some smaller clouds on the sky and the temperature drops rapidly. We now need our puffies and realize one more that summer will soon be over. We pack out all our food and hit the trail again. By 10am we’ve already hiked 10 miles - we call it 10 before 10 (like the news program in Switzerland :-)).
The trail is now up and down again. We pass a very big burnt area. The giant burnt trees here look weird. The end of their trunks are covered in a reddish, sticky liquid which makes it look like blood. The scenery could easily play in a Tim Burton movie - black, burnt trees bleeding to death. Anyway, after the end of this climb we reach a plateau with a beautiful view and sit down to enjoy the views and fill ourselves up with warm sunlight like lizards in the sun.
From here it is only another 8 miles to Mazama Village and mostly downhill. We almost run down the hills and by 2pm we have already hiked 20 miles - so 20 before 2! The trail widens now and after 20 more minutes we reach the road to Mazama Village.
We don’t really like road walking but as it is less than one mile the walk is not too bad.
When we reach the Mazama Village General Store we meet BigBro again who wanted to leave just now. But we can convince him to stay one more night with us!
After a while Trooper arrives too and Maya and I enter the store to get our boxes.
There should be 6 boxes in total: 2 resupply boxes, our bounce box, one box with a replacement for by broken back pack frame and two boxes with replacements for my air mattress. But unfortunately only one of the mattresses has arrived - the other one went missing somewhere between Yosemite Valley and here…
But since I only need one replacement (which was for free anyways) the damage is not really big and all the other boxes have actually arrived.
Now we walk over to the free camping area for hikers, our tent next to BigBro’s tent, do laundry, have a warm shower and then the three of us hit the next restaurant and have a decent burger dinner!
Tired and happy we crawl in our tents and look forward to finally seeing Crater Lake tomorrow - a highlight I was looking forward to since the beginning!
