THE PACIFIC CREST TRAIL 2018
starts with a single step.
Miles 1717.7 to 1728.1. Callahan‘s Lodge to forest camp.
I wake up well rested, but I already know that Dario didn‘t sleep much last night. He went back and forth to the bathroom, diarrhea. He feels sick and we consider going back to Ashland to see a doctor. He‘s been feeling sick on and off for a while now and we fear that it might be Giardia, a parasite one gets for example from drinking unfiltered water. Which we have done back in Northern California, when we got back from Europe. We get in touch with Anja and Lari, both doctors and two of my clostest friends who suggest that the antibiotics we are carrying might work. Unfortunately we don‘t carry all the pills, but we hope that 5 pills in three days will do the trick. He swallows the first pill, then jumps into the jacuzzi once more to relax while I pack our stuff.
We check out at 11am, decide on eating when we are back on trail. The weather looks lovely, but it’s a little chilly outside. The sky has cleared up, not a lot of smoke in the air, the sun is shining.
We have downloaded the first Harry Potter book and are both listening to it simultaneously. The escape to Hogwarts feels good, it distracts us from overthinking the situation we‘re in and still let‘s us enjoy the pretty scenery. And Jim Dale tells the story so well, it’s amazing!
After a short roadwalk we are back on trail, through meadows and bushes, the sun warms us and Dario feels a little better. We then enter forest and suddenly see Flamin‘ Hot in front of us who couldn’t be bothered to get back on trail last night and stayed with a local. We decide on a campsite not far ahead and also text BigBro where we will be staying as he‘s gonna join us tonight.
When we get to the chosen tentsite there are a lot of hikers there, NOBO and SOBO, getting water from the small spring there. We have a look around for a large enough space for all three tents and spot a good one. While we go back to the water to get our packs two other hikers hurry down there and steal our spot. Well, that‘s not very nice! We feel grumpy now and set up our tent right beside the spring, this incident having slightly dampened our mood.
BigBro arrives before Flamin‘ Hot and squeezes his tent next to ours. Flamin‘ Hot then joins and cowboycamps right behind us, using our tent as a windshield. It feels nice sleeping so close together to our friends. I just hope they don‘t all give a snoring concert during the night!
